Restoration is for the filters everyone else gave up on

A clean maintains a healthy filter. Restoration brings back one that’s been written off.

You’re in restoration territory if any of this sounds familiar: regenerations keep failing. A mobile clean worked for a fortnight, then the light came back. The filter has years of ash in it. A sensor fault keeps tripping the same warning. Or a garage has already said the words “needs a new DPF, about £1,200 fitted”.

Restoration is our off-car refurbishment plus the repair work around it: the deep wash takes out the soot and ash, and while the filter is off we fix what made it block in the first place. Faulty pressure and temperature sensors are replaced in-house, and the regeneration system is checked and proven working before the car leaves. Cleaning the filter without fixing the cause is how filters end up “dead” to begin with.

What a restoration includes

  1. Full diagnostic, first

    Fault codes, soot and ash counters, sensor readings, regeneration history. This is where we find out why the filter blocked, and whether restoring it is honestly worth your money.

  2. Off-car deep wash

    The filter comes off and goes through the wash rig: soot AND ash out, dried, flow-tested against as-new figures. The bit no on-car clean can do.

  3. Faults fixed in-house

    Faulty DPF pressure and temperature sensors replaced while the filter is off, wiring checked, and the turbo inspected — the usual casualty of a long-blocked filter.

  4. Proven before it leaves

    Refitted, regeneration verified, road-tested, and handed back with its before/after flow readings and warranty. If it isn’t right, it doesn’t leave.

A cracked or melted core can’t be restored — no honest workshop will tell you otherwise. When the diagnostic or the wash reveals one, you get the evidence in your hand and a straight conversation about options, not a bill for a clean that was never going to work. That’s the difference between a restoration service and a car wash for filters.

Restoration questions

Can a badly blocked DPF really be saved?

Usually, yes. Soot and ash loading — even years of it — washes out off-car. What can’t be saved is physical damage: a cracked or melted core. The diagnostic and the wash tell us which one you have, and you hear the verdict before you commit to anything.

What’s the difference between restoration and refurbishment?

Refurbishment is the off-car deep wash itself. Restoration is the full rescue for filters with more wrong than soot and ash: the wash plus sensor replacement, fault-finding and regeneration repairs, done together so the filter doesn’t just come back clean — it stops re-blocking.

A garage told me I need a new DPF. Should I believe them?

Get a second opinion before spending £1,000+. Many “needs a new DPF” verdicts are really “needs the ash out and a £40 sensor”. Bring us the car or the quote; the diagnostic gives you a straight answer either way.
