Does mobile DPF cleaning actually work?
Short answer: it’s a temporary fix at best, it only ever shifts soot, and if your car qualifies for one you might not need to pay anyone at all. Here’s the whole truth, including the free option.
What a mobile clean really is
A mobile DPF service comes to your driveway and does one of two things: forces a regeneration (running the engine hot and fast so the soot burns off) or runs a foam/fluid treatment through the filter on the car. Both can shift soot. Neither can touch ash, the mineral residue that’s left behind every time soot burns, because ash doesn’t burn and can’t be flushed out with the filter on the vehicle.
That’s not an opinion, it’s chemistry. It’s also why filters treated at the roadside keep coming back: the ash stays, the filter keeps its old age, and each regen has less clean filter to work with.
Mobile clean vs workshop refurbishment
| Mobile / on-car clean | Off-car refurbishment | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes soot | Yes, via forced regen | Yes |
| Removes ash | Never — impossible on the car | Yes, fully |
| How long it lasts | A week to a couple of months, at best | The filter’s remaining life |
| Filter age after | Unchanged — keeps its old age | Reset to as-new flow |
| Works with other ECU faults | No — the ECU locks out forced regens | Yes, condition doesn’t matter off-car |
| Upkeep needed | Very regular motorway runs | Normal driving |
| Proof it worked | The light’s off, for now | Before/after flow readings on paper |
Three checks before ANY forced regen
Ours or anyone else’s. If one of these fails, a mobile clean isn’t just pointless, it’s risky.
-
No other fault codes stored
The ECU will refuse (lock out) a forced regeneration while other faults are present. A diagnostic scan comes first, always. Anyone who starts a regen without scanning is gambling with your engine.
-
Oil level correct — and ideally changed first
A forced regen holds the engine above 3,000rpm for 30–45 minutes. A blocked DPF also leaks diesel into the engine oil, thinning it. Running a long, hot regen on contaminated oil puts the turbo at risk. Check the level; an oil change beforehand is strongly advised.
-
The blockage is soot, not ash
Regeneration burns soot. It cannot touch ash. If the filter is ash-loaded, no mobile service on earth can fix it, whatever the leaflet says.
You might not need to pay anyone
If your car passes all three checks, try this first: roughly an hour of steady motorway driving at around 65mph, no stop-starts. That gets the exhaust hot enough for the car to regenerate by itself, achieving the same result as a paid forced regen. We’d rather tell you that than sell you something temporary.
If the light comes back after a proper motorway run, the blockage is beyond soot. That’s not a maybe, that’s the filter telling you it needs the ash out.
The honest verdict
A mobile clean is a temporary fix at best. When it works it may last a week, or a couple of months, and it needs very regular motorway journeys to maintain. It does not extend the DPF’s life: the filter keeps its old age and its ash. Only an off-car workshop refurbishment removes the ash and returns the DPF to as-new condition, which is why that’s the only fix we put a 30-month warranty behind.
Where a mobile visit genuinely makes sense: a healthy, young filter that’s soot-loaded from town driving, on a car with no other faults and good oil, for someone who can’t get to a motorway. That’s a real case. It’s just much rarer than the ads suggest.

Mobile cleaning questions
Does mobile DPF cleaning work?
At best temporarily. It can clear soot but never ash, it needs a fault-free ECU and healthy oil, and the filter keeps its old age. The full reasoning is on this page; the fix that resets the filter is an off-car refurbishment.
How long does a mobile clean last?
When it works: a week to a couple of months, sustained only by very regular motorway journeys. The ash it leaves behind means the blockage clock is already running again.
Why do mobile services advertise so cheap?
Because a regen is quick, and because “from” prices sell. Check what the price includes, whether there’s any warranty, and what happens if the regen is locked out by another fault. Our equivalent is the £69 regen clean, and we’ll tell you before you book if it’s the wrong rung of the ladder.
Is the motorway trick safe?
If there are no other faults and the oil level is right, yes: it’s just the car’s own regeneration given the conditions it needs. If the light is flashing, warnings are stacking up, or the oil smells of diesel, don’t. Call us instead.
